Toshiba’s sponsors a first class education for an Aboriginal student

Yalari 20Toshiba is proud to continue its support for an indigenous student through Yalari.  Yalari helps Indigenous children from regional and remote communities by providing scholarships for secondary education at leading boarding schools. The scholarships are supported by sponsors, who commit to 6 years of funding to enable a young Indigenous person throughout their secondary education, from year 7 to year 12.

In the 20 years since it was founded, Yalari has awarded over 800 life-changing educational opportunities for students from 187 communities in every state and territory across the country. It’s a highly successful program, with an overall retention rate in years10-12 of 84.1%. In 2023, the rate was not only higher than the average for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders but higher than the national retention rate for all Australian students. Yarali opens doors to a brighter future for sponsored students, with 99% transitioning to further education or employment, including 71% who go to study at university.

About Jed

Toshiba sponsors Jed – who is now in Year 9 at St Ignatius College, in Riverview, Sydney.  Our sponsorship started when Jed was in Year 7 and will continue to year 12. Jed is a lively, bright student who is a conscientious learner, strongly values individualism and enjoys the extracurricular activities the school offers. He particularly loves drama, and this year took part in the school production of Pygmalion.

Jed says that the Yalari program, and Toshiba’s sponsorship has made a massive difference to him: ‘I am so grateful to have this scholarship. If it weren't for Yalari, I don't know where I would be, but I know that this is a gift that will set me up for life.’

Toshiba’s hopes for Jed

Every Yalari student receives a ‘sponsor profile’, telling them about the organisation that is behind their scholarship and why they support Yalari. Through Toshiba’s profile, from David James, chair of the Toshiba Reconciliation Working Committee, Jed knows that we support Yalari because ‘Education changes lives. We’re proud members of Supply Nation, backing First Nations businesses and future legends like you.’ David shares Toshiba’s hopes for Jed: ‘That you keep dreaming big, back yourself, and know that you’ve got a team cheering you on every step of the way.’

Toshiba is committed to providing opportunities through education for all Australian children. Our support for Yalari aligns with our goal to play a part in creating more opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, as also outlined in our  Reconciliation Action Plan
